Challenging the Myths of the Self-taught Craftsman, Original Design, and the Handmade Object

Brian Boggs

Unlike Brian’s usual presentations, this session won’t be about technique or process! Instead, Brian will discuss how we use our language. He will identify some concepts that are often used “mythologically”: i.e. “handmade”, the idea of being “self-taught”, and the concept of “original design”. For example, the way we refer to original design – especially as it relates to patented products – perpetuates a myth that we originate designs. It may be that we have used our imagination to develop something, but thinking that the idea originates from us rather than concepts coming through us, sets us up for running out of ideas! There is no limit to ideas in the universe, we are always being shown ideas if we learn how to listen. We can increase our bandwidth to receive ideas but it’s minimized by the way we use our language. Attend this session to explore these topics further with Brian.

This session is FREE to all AWFS Fair attendees and exhibitors, no additional session registration
